Just like a good recipe, a strong relationship needs the right ingredients: a dash of romance, a spoonful of commitment, and a lot of understanding. To talk about these beautiful and complex feelings in Dutch, you need the right vocabulary.

So, I have prepared a menu for you, filled with the most essential Dutch words and phrases for relationships, dating, and marriage. Let's cook up some conversation!

The First Course: Dating & Falling in Love (Uitdrukkingen)

• Een relatie hebben (met) — To be in a relationship (with)

This section describes the official status of your relationship.

• Getrouwd — Married
  Example: Mijn ouders zijn al dertig jaar getrouwd. 👰🤵 (My parents have been married for thirty years.)
• Vrijgezel / Alleenstaand — Single
  Example: Hij is op dit moment gelukkig vrijgezel. (He is currently happily single.)
  Good to know: Vrijgezel often implies being single by choice. Alleenstaand is a more formal term and can also simply mean “living alone.”
• Verloofd — Engaged
  Example: Mijn zus is sinds vorige maand verloofd. (My sister has been engaged since last month.)

These phrases help you add more depth and nuance to your conversations about relationships.

• Enerzijds... anderzijds... — On the one hand... on the other hand...

  Chef's Tip: This expression is a bit formal, like a fancy restaurant dish. In everyday spoken Dutch, people usually say Aan de ene kant... aan de andere kant...

• De bruiloft — The wedding
  Example: De bruiloft was een prachtig feest met veel gasten. 🎉 (The wedding was a beautiful party with many guests.)
• Geregistreerd partnerschap — Registered partnership
  Example: In Nederland kun je kiezen voor een geregistreerd partnerschap. ✍️ (In the Netherlands, you can opt for a registered partnership.)
• Het vrijgezellenfeest — The bachelor/bachelorette party
  Example: We organiseren een vrijgezellenfeest voor onze vriend. 🥳 (We are organizing a bachelor party for our friend.)
  Good to know: This word is unisex! You can specify by saying vrijgezellenfeest voor een man or ...voor een vrouw.
